Apart from these, radioactive materials are also used to detect explosives.Ĭarbon dating (used for geological, anthropological, and archaeological research) is used for measuring the radiation release profile of the materials 9radioactivity) which is beneficial in archaeological findings. For example, measuring devices use radioactive materials for, testing the moisture content of the soil, measuring the thickness of paper and plastics during manufacturing, and checking the height of fluid when filling bottles in factories. These industries use radioactive materials for productivity and safety measures. Nuclear energy is widely used in various field industries like civil engineering, materials analysis, measuring devices, process control in factories, oil and mineral exploration, and checking oil and gas pipelines for leaks and weaknesses. Measuring the efficiency of fertilizer uptake.Insect pest control using sterilization.Climate change adaptation by increasing resource-use efficiency and productivity. The Agricultural and food industry has several benefits of using nuclear energy. Nearly 1/3 of patients admitted in US hospitals are diagnosed with the help of radioactive materials. Nuclear medical imaging, a combination of radioisotopes and camera imaging, helps doctors to detect tumors, size anomalies, or other problems in the human body. Radioactive materials or radio-isotopes, produced from either reactors or cyclotrons, are used by doctors for therapeutic use to kill cancerous tissue, reduce the size of tumors, and alleviate pain. The medical field employs nuclear energy to a large extent for diagnostics, treatment, and disease management. As nuclear power plants do not burn fuel, This heat is then used by a turbine generator to produce electricity. Nuclear fission reaction is vastly employed by all power plants to produce electricity, and most of them use uranium atoms, for fission reaction, to generate a huge amount of heat and radiation. Nuclear energy is one of the best sources to fulfill the ever-surging demand for electricity. Electricity GenerationĪn exponential increase in the population and expanding economy, are the significant reasons for the rocketed demand for electricity. There are a variety of daily life applications that make use of nuclear energy for their basic operation. Helium is formed on nuclear fusion of hydrogen isotopes namely, Tritium H^. Conversion of mass into energy takes place, as the total mass of the fused atom is less than the mass of two original nuclei. ![]() A huge amount of heat energy is produced during this reaction which is further used to generate electricity in nuclear power plants.Ī nuclear fusion reaction is the fusion of two or more atoms to release heat energy. Nuclear fission reaction uses highly radioactive elements, like uranium, plutonium, and thorium, which splits into multiple parts to form smaller nuclei, when these radioactive elements are attacked by low-energy neutrons. ![]() ![]() ![]() (some, such as Lusterleaf, Mary Nell, Nellie R.Graceful plumes downsized for modern gardens! It is intended to be a guide for selecting ornamental plants for landscapes where deer browsing is a problem. The list below is a compilation of ornamental plants for Georgia hardiness zones that appear in published literature (see References) as well as observations by the authors. Furthermore, many variables influence deer feeding preferences. Because most of these lists are constructed from observational trial-and-error data instead of controlled scientific studies, they are open for criticism. Over the years, wildlife organizations, universities, botanical gardens and garden writers have constructed many lists of deer-tolerant and deer-susceptible ornamental plants. Sometimes, deer browse new plantings or established plants with tender new growth, then avoid those same plants when their leaves are mature. Deer also shy away from plants with prickly or rough leaves and plants with a bitter taste. Some gardeners have reported success with planting strong-scented plants like lantana, catmint, chives, mint, sage or thyme adjacent to plants that deer frequently browse. ![]() However, deer generally do not like plants with pungent aromas. There is no such thing as a deer-resistant plant, and when deer populations are high and food becomes scarce, deer may feed on plants that are thought to be deer-tolerant. If deer are overabundant in your neighborhood, and deer herd reduction or management is not feasible, a good way to prevent deer browsing in landscapes is to plant ornamental plants that deer do not like to eat. Trapping and relocating deer is costly and often harmful or fatal to deer. Fencing whole communities or individual properties is often not practical, and may be against local ordinances or community covenants. Shooting deer or using noise guns is prohibited in most residential neighborhoods, and many citizens are opposed to this method of control. Most "home remedy" repellents, such as soap, human hair and animal dung, are unreliable. Although there are a number of commercially available deer repellents on the market, none of them are 100 percent effective. Nuisance deer that feast on home gardens and bucks that damage young trees by rubbing them with their antlers during the rutting season are difficult and expensive to control in residential communities. Deer also get about one-third of their water from the moisture in irrigated plants and young, succulent vegetation on expanding leaves, buds and green stems. Fertilized plants, such as those in home landscapes, provide protein, energy-rich carbohydrates, minerals and salts. The initial array may be changed by "building" - transferring cards among the face-up cards in the tableau. When starting out, the foundations and waste pile do not have any cards. The remaining cards form the stock (or “hand”) pile and are placed above the tableau. Continue this pattern until pile seven has one card facing up on top of a pile of six cards facing down. Starting again from left to right, place one card face up on the third pile and deal one card face down on piles four through seven. Starting again from left to right, place one card face up on the second pile and deal one card face down on piles three through seven. The Talon (or “Waste”) Pile: Cards from the stock pile that have no place in the tableau or on foundations are laid face up in the waste pile. The Stock (or “Hand”) Pile: If the entire pack is not laid out in a tableau at the beginning of a game, the remaining cards form the stock pile from which additional cards are brought into play according to the rules. The foundation piles are hearts, diamonds, spades, and clubs. In most Solitaire games, the four aces are the bottom card or base of the foundations. The Foundations: Four piles on which a whole suit or sequence must be built up. The Tableau: Seven piles that make up the main table. There are four different types of piles in Solitaire: The rank of cards in Solitaire games is: K (high), Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, A (low). The ultimate objective is to build the whole pack onto the foundations, and if that can be done, the Solitaire game is won. The first objective is to release and play into position certain cards to build up each foundation, in sequence and in suit, from the ace through the king. Standard Solitaire uses one 52-card pack. Virtually all Solitaire games are played with one or more standard 52-card packs. These are usually half the size of standard playing cards. The group was admitted to a downstairs office, where the Squire sat down at a desk, inserted a long form in a typewriter, and for fifteen minutes filled it in with information that the troopers gave him. They then ordered him to get back in and follow them to “the Squire’s.” Presently, the two cars pulled into the driveway of a frame house, and one of the troopers called to an upstairs window that he had a speeder in custody. Two men climbed out, wearing the broad-brimmed hats of Pennsylvania state troopers, and ordered Desmond to produce his documents, and to get out of the car and show them that he could walk a straight line. With a gentle whirring of a siren, the sedan pulled up beside him, and one of its occupants motioned to him to stop. He assumed that it was being piloted by a prankster, and he accelerated in order to get away from him. Presently, he became aware that the sedan was right behind him. “Brubeck’s orders were somehow lost,” Rice explains,Īt perhaps two o’clock one recent morning, while was driving Brubeck-at a speed considerably above the legal limit-through Pennsylvania after a concert, he overtook a black sedan, which was proceeding at a rather leisurely pace. He never saw combat, though: the general who ran the center turned out to love jazz. Bodley made Brubeck read Dostoevsky, Proust, and Mann, and presided over a discussion group “devoted to subjects like the Oedipus complex, Cubism, Marxism, logical positivism, and tone rows.” Brodley also introduced Brubek to his future wife, Iola Marie Whitlock, “a girl,” Rice writes, “with a sensitive ear, a substantial literary gift, and a distaste for getting any grade lower than an A.”īrubeck was drafted almost immediately after college, and, after some time in the U.S., was sent to a “replacement center,” from which new troops could be deployed, in Metz, in eastern France. Russell Bodley, drafted the cowboy into the avant-garde. His mentor in the music department, a man named J. (He was, Rice says, “one of the sleepiest and most solvent undergraduates on campus.”) He eventually gave in and began taking courses in music. But he was constantly distracted by music in the evenings, he’d play in local jazz clubs. At the College of the Pacific, in California, he started training to become a veterinarian, determined to move back home and work on his family’s ranch. “The only part of the jazz world Brubeck has an affinity with,” Rich concludes, “is jazz.”īrubeck almost didn’t become a jazz musician. Brubeck calls himself “the cleanup man” because, when the other members of the quartet get tired of a solo and abandon it part-way through, he picks up the slack, out of a sense of duty. (Paul Desmond, the quartet’s sax player, explained Brubeck’s experiments in hedonism this way: “Every five years or so, Dave makes a major breakthrough, like discovering room service.”) Brubeck once proudly declared, of his quartet, “We’re the worst-dressed group in America!” In his playing, he displays patience and fortitude. Brubeck liked to save money, didn’t smoke, and limited himself to one martini before dinner. He grew up on a ranch, and spent most of his youth wanting to be a cowboy (that accounts, Rice thinks, for the way he moves at the piano, “rid the piano stool hell for leather, as if it were a cow pony”). In June of 1961, Robert Rice profiled Dave Brubeck for The New Yorker, in an article called “ The Cleanup Man.” Brubeck, Rice wrote, was a decidedly uncool cool jazz musician. ![]() On the single’s b-side was “Blue Rondo a la Turk,” a song written in 9/8 time, like the music Brubeck had heard in Istanbul. “Take Five,” which is written in 5/4 time, was the breakout hit single. Later, back in the States, the group recorded “Time Out”-an album of songs with unusual time signatures. It was a traditional Turkish folk song, widely known-in Turkey.Īs the tour continued, Brubeck kept listening for interesting rhythms, and he kept asking his quartet to experiment with them. He hummed the tune, and several of the musicians started playing it, adding flourishes and counterpoint, even improvising on it. He told some of them about the rhythm that he’d heard on the streets and asked if anyone knew what it was. ![]() When Brubeck arrived, the musicians were taking a break from a rehearsal. Like many broadcasters at the time, the station had its own symphony orchestra. Later that day, Brubeck had an interview scheduled at a local radio station.
